What to do if it’s raining on my wedding day?

Wet weather forecast….

Well, this 2022 – 2023 wedding season here in Northland (Whangarei, Dargaville, Paihia) has shown us a ‘plan B’ is vital when you are planning your wedding day. I must say one of my important questions when I have a couple planning an outdoor wedding is ‘what is your plan B if by chance it rains?’ Just this last weekend (late January) my wedding couple were confident that at this time of the year the weather would be settled and usually is! And they planned an outdoor under the sale cloth wedding ceremony – after chatting with them we were ready for plan B – move to the marquee! As it turned out the rain and showers abated for about an hour so we had a beautiful outdoor ceremony and arrived at the marquee for the reception and after party before the rain and drizzle arrived and settled in for the evening! This did not stop people creating forever memories ~ dancing in the rain!

All along there was a knowing that how ever it turned out, it would all be fine, nothing was going to ruin this couple’s day ~ they were well prepared physically, mentally and emotionally! They were flexible ~

Since you can’t control the weather, accepting that rain is a possibility will alleviate a lot of stress and tension. Going with the flow and adapting to whatever the day brings is much more freeing mentality and emotionally. Whether it’s a delayed start time or putting ‘plan B’ into action, flexibility is key. It’s important not to let a little rain ruin your wedding day bubble. If your energy remains positive as a couple, your wedding party, family, and guests will be positive and embrace the day as well.

You know, society puts a lot of pressure, on the idea of your wedding being the best day of your life and there is no reason why it can’t be regardless of environmental factors. If your wedding wasn’t everything you dreamed it would be and you are left feeling disappointed. I would advise you talk openly and honestly with spouse about how you feel about the things that didn’t go as you wanted. However, it is important to move on, and embrace your new married life. And do, take the time to reflect on the parts of the day that you loved and were happy with, put your focus and energy on those aspects instead. Positive thinking can really help! At the end of the day, the love that brought you together is what counts and is designed to weather the worst of storms!!

Rain on your wedding day is often viewed as a ‘worst case scenario’ – but it definitely doesn’t have to be that!

Did you know that rain on your wedding day is believed by many cultures to bring you good luck, a good marriage, good fortune, or health?

Dealing with the potential for rain on your wedding day!

No matter what time of year you choose to get married, it seems rain is always going to be a very real possibility. First do what is reassuring for you, that is designing your ‘plan B’ so you genuinely love it, and that will help avoid stress and disappointment about your special day.

I suggest purchasing enough clear umbrellas for the wedding party, so you arrive dry. These will look the best in wedding photos by allowing the light to filter through and working seamlessly with your decor and outfits. I have seen some amazing wedding photos taken in the rain. Definitely talk with your photographer so you are all prepared. If you are preparing well in advance, clear umbrellas can be bought in bulk for under $10 each. And then of course knowing what you will shift around within your indoor space/marquee/barn…to create your ceremonial spot. There are many ways to make this feel special – candles, scattered petals – fairy lights – neon signage and the list goes on – many, many, ideas on the internet!

‘So, if it rains on your wedding, embrace it, grab an umbrella and have the best day of your life!’
